Abstract:

Objective. To verify the body image perception and associated factors among elderlyCampina Grande / PB. Method. This is a cross-sectional, population and home-based study, with individuals 60 years or older, of both sexes. The body image perception was considered the dependent variable for purposes of analysis and study of possible associations. The independent variables were: age group, nutritional status, number of diseases, health perception and regular practice of physical activities. To identify factors associated, univariate and multivariate regression analyses were carried out, using the SPSS 17.0 software. Results. Overall, 806 elderly (69.1% women) were interviewed. Men showed greater satisfaction with body image when compared to women and older participants were more satisfied than younger participants. Among the factors related to dissatisfaction in women, underweight and overweight/obesity were associated with an increased risk of dissatisfaction. Among men, older age constituted a protective factor for dissatisfaction, while underweight and overweight/obesity were risk factors for dissatisfaction. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest a possible influence of nutritional status on body image perception in the elderly, negatively affect the perception of the image of the elderly of both sexes.
