Abstract:

Tuberculosis has a close relationship with living conditions. This study classifies Brazilian cities according to the occurrence of tuberculosis (TB) cases and the drug-resistant form (DR-TB), and describes them regarding the population\'s health conditions, tuberculosis control indicators, demographic and socioeconomic profile. In 2014, 327 cities reported cases of DR-TB. Integrated regions of development or metropolitan regions accounted for 80.1% of the country\'s DR-TB cases. Cities with DR-TB cases had worse TB outcome indicators, but higher percentages of culture test. These cities had more inhabitants and better socioeconomic indicators. The 3644 cities with TB cases but without DR-TB cases had the worst socioeconomic indicators among the three groups. The 1594 municipalities without cases of TB had the lowest rates of unemployment and AIDS detection, and greater coverage of primary health care. The different municipal profiles we found can support the improvement of national interventions for tuberculosis control in Brazil.
