Abstract:

Aimed to describe and to analyze breastfeeding practice in children under five years of age in the state of Pernambuco, in 2006, according to birth weight. A transversal study with a sample of 1,595 children. Chi square test to examine bivariate associations and Poisson regression for multivariate adjustment of conditioning factors to exclusive breastfeeding > 4 months, according to birth weight. It was found that the performance of prenatal care (p = 0.013) and number of visits (p = 0.001) benefited children born weighing >2,500 g, compared to those with birth weight 2,500 g were detected associations with the variables per capita income, geographic area, guidance on breastfeeding during prenatal and sex of the children. The group of LBW children was not favored for recommendations regarding breastfeeding, as well as the results were differentthe relations of the variables that remained in the two groups representing the final models of the multivariate analyzes.
