Abstract:

Objective: Analyze if the breed can be considered a limiting factor in the utilization of dental services by the elderly. Methodology: The present study has an analytical character, with the utilization of secondary data collected by the National Survey of Oral Health in 2003. Were included the examined that declared themselves as white, brown or black, at the age group of 65 to 74 years. The sample number was composed by 5.108 elderly being 2.575 white and 2.533 black. The Chi-square test was used to the bivariate analysis and a logistic regression model to the multivariate analysis. Results: Of the white, 3,8% stated that have never gone to the dentist while to the black this value is 7,8%. Even after the adjustment with interception of denture need and pain, the chance of the black elderly not have used the dentistry service at least once in their life is 0.62 OR less than to a white elderly. Of those that used the services, 21,2% of the white elderly visited the dentist in the last year, while to the black the value was 14,2%, in the adjusted model intercepted by the need of denture and pain the OR was 0.60. All the relations were statistically significant. Conclusions: The breed is a limiting factor in the utilization of dental services by the elderly and, even after the adjustments, the black elderly remain with higher difficulty in the use of oral health services.
