Abstract:

The paper analyses the dimension of parental care and their connection with the decisions on (not) vaccinating their children within the context of high-income and high-schooling families of São Paulo-SP. The research is aimed by the qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews conducted with 15 couples who were divided into three groups: vaccinators, selective vaccinators and non-vaccinators. The analytic- interpretative run of the data was performed by means of content analysis and according to references to health care and family. To all the analyzed couples, the choice of (not) vaccinating their children is conceived as parental care and protection to the child, however, for the vaccinators, protect is to vaccinate their children; for the selective vaccinators, protect is to single out each case; and for the non-vaccinators, protect is to not vaccinate their children, but to protect against the risks of vaccination. The study also revealed that the reasons for non-vaccination, screening and/ or postponing the vaccination schedule were similar to those found in the literature. The study highlights the importance of the socio-cultural understanding to (non) acceptance of vaccination in the context of parental care.
