Abstract:

Advances have occurred in relation to coverage of water supply and sanitation in Brazil, however, still observed inequalities related to coverage of these services, reflecting the importance of diarrheal disease in Brazilian epidemiological context.
The aim of this study was to measure the impact of the system of water supply and sanitation on diarrheal diseases among children under five. The global burden of diarrhea was calculated based on the population attributable fraction, using information on prevalence and relative risks from the census 2000/2010 and study by Pruss et al (2002).
North Region, Northeast and Jequitinhonha had the highest rates and rate ratios of DALY. The fraction of diarrhea attributable to the system of water supply and sanitation was 83.0%, decreasing to 78.3% if the sanitation had a coverage of 100%. Inverse relationship was found between rates and DALYs attributable fractions with GDP per capita. A magnification beyond the coverage of services, improving the quality of water available at home was urgent. These measures will bring economic and social benefits related to the reduction of diarrheal diseases and, consequently, improving the quality of life of children under five.
