Abstract:

Objective: to synthesize articles that address fake news and vaccine hesitancy against COVID-19 in the context of public health. Method: integrative review that included original studies indexed in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature databases; Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online; Scopus; Web of Science and Embase, published in any language, between 2019 and 2022. The critical analysis was carried out in a descriptive way, depending on the research question and the objective of the review. Results: eleven articles were selected, with a predominance of cross-sectional studies. Gender, age, marital status, education, political position, religion, trust in health authorities, perception of side effects and vaccine efficacy, among others, were related to the process of adherence to vaccination. Hesitation and misinformation are the main obstacles to achieving vaccination coverage in many countries. All studies address the relationship between low immunization intent and use of social media as a source of information about SARS-CoV-2. Conclusion: it is necessary to increase confidence in the safety and efficacy of vaccines. A better understanding of the benefits of vaccination for COVID-19 is imperative to combat hesitation and increase vaccine adherence.
