Abstract:

This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics associated with the consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed and ultraprocessed foods (UPF) by adolescentsthe Metropolitan Region of Grande Vitória - Espírito Santo, Brazil. The data was obtained between 2016 and 2017. Logistic regression was used for the multivariate analysis. A total of 2285 adolescents between 15 and 19 years old participated in the study. The highest consumption of minimally processed foods was associated with the adolescent\'s paid work (OR=1.27; 95%CI:1.04-1.56), high family income (OR=1.5; 95%CI=1.10-2.17) and practice of physical activity (OR=1.9; 95%CI=1.45-2.63). The skin color brown/black (OR=1.3; 95%CI=1.02-1.61) and the habit of eating while surfing the internet (OR=1.4; 95%CI=1.02-1.88) increased the chances of consuming the UPF. Being enrolled in private schools and in the third/fourth year of high school reduced the consumption of the UPF by 41.7% and 37.2%, respectively. We conclude that high purchasing power and the practice of physical activity influence the higher consumption of minimally processed foods. On the other hand, being brown/black skinned and using the Internet while eating increased the chances of higher consumption of UPF.
