Abstract:

In this article, we outline some interactions between the concepts of childhood and [re]habilitation, which have had parallel developments, especially since the twentieth century. This complex interaction is mediated and constructed on scientific discourses based on consolidated childhood. We emphasize this analysis from two perspectives: 1) academic positions, which from professions such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, address childhood [re]habilitation and 2) public policies that contribute to the creation of places for the professional practice of [re]habilitation. A literature review guided by the question what does childhood [re]habilitation mean in Colombia?, situated each of the sections of this text, historically defined by: 1) the emergence of these [re]habilitation professions in Colombia, 2) the 90s, a decade marked by major changes of the Colombian political reform, and 3) the developments in technology introduced in the XXI century. We concluded that medical hegemony continues guiding the process of [re]habilitation from a context that has changed, which imposes new challenges that require new understandings and major conceptual and practical movements. These [re]habilitation professions have generated new engagements towards understanding social processes of childhood disability, but are still acting on individual basis.
