Abstract:

Objectives: To understand the reasons why mothers search for urgency and emergency attention for children in non urgent conditions in a reference emergency pediatrics hospital of Unique Health System in Belo Horizonte.
Methods: The qualitative approach has been used as a methodology, having the semi-structured interview as a data collection resource. Twenty seven mothers of children classified as little and non urgent were interviewed.
Results: Fever and respiratory problems were the main complaints. Even when the situation is a non-urgent case, parents bring their children to the Emergency Department because of the resolution and medical attention advantages, facilities of access, physicians with skill and expert qualities to take care of children, their particular previous experiences in non-urgent Departments and other motivations.
Conclusions: The statements showed a gap between these mothers feelings and the rationality of the service organization. This work could identify aspects which can lead to reflection on service organization, so that the reception can turn into usual practice, outdoing the hegemonic model towards the centralization of the user.
