Abstract:

Children’s attitudes regarding health care play an important role in how children experience health and disease. The present study aims to contribute to a better understanding of children’ attitudes and opinions about health care, namely in terms of medical procedures, institutions, health professionals. The sample consists in 381 children, recruited from different schools in Lisbon. The more negative attitudes are attributed to institutions, while positive attitudes were related to the efficacy of health professionals. Medical procedures were considered less painful compared to common accidents. Higher levels of pain were reported by female children and by the children on the first grade of schoolarity. Medical fears had mediated the relation between pain perception and children’s attitudes. Higher levels of pain perception were related to more negative attitudes regarding to healthcare. However, this relation was weakened when the fears about medical issues were contemplated. In sum, it is crucial a translated instrument to assess the children’s attitudes regarding to health care, which may even contribute to the development of intervention programs in health promotion.
