Abstract:

Introduction: The Chronic Back Problem (CBP) is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world and represents one of the main causes of years of life lost through disability. Although of great relevance to public health, studies on access and use of types of treatment are scarce.
Objective: To describe the main treatments for CBP in Brazil, to analyze the factors associated with its use and to discuss possible inequalities in the use of physical therapy / exercises (as a proxy for preventive practices) and the use of medications (as an intervention proxy in the acute phase).
Methods: From the PNS 2013 descriptive analyzes were performed on CBP prevalence and multiple logistic regression to analyze the association according to demographic, socioeconomic, health status, CBP limitation, access to health and regional services.
Results: Having higher education increased 2.39 times the chances of performing physiotherapy, however, schooling was not associated with medication use. Upper-stratum individuals are almost twice as likely to undergo physical therapy, which has not been observed for drugs. On health conditions, increasing the degree of CBP limitation increases the chance of use of medications by up to 3.5 times, but does not change when associated with physical therapy.
