Abstract:

People with prolonged dependence on mechanical ventilation require permanent care and use of equipment that can determine a long term hospital stay, difficulty of access for patients with acute injuries, as well as personal expertise and stress with limited quality of life for their families or caregivers. This critical review of publications on mechanical ventilation dependency in children and adolescents aimed at making available information organized in a systematic manner in order to support the discussion on the subject, whereas the changes in epidemiological profile and growing technological determine access needs home cas intensive hospital beds and complex home care for chronic patients, who still have limits of supply and regulatory restrictions on Brazilian public health system.
