Abstract:

The objective of this study was to analyze mortality due to circulatory diseases in parallel with the evolution of the Family Health Strategy in Brazil. This is an ecological and retrospective study based on temporal evolution of the FHS and mortality rates due to circulatory diseases in Brazil. A description of inhabitant x FHS coverage ratio and health indicators related to mortality due to circulatory disease was carried out. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient test was used for the statistical association. There was a population increase of 15% in Brazil, evolution of 761% in the number of FHS and 5% increase in mortality due to circulatory diseases. The population x FHS ratio rose from 52,838 (1998) to 7,084 (2006) people assisted by FHS. North and northeast regions showed growth in mortality rates due to circulatory diseases and in 21 states (81%) there was positive correlation between this mortality and FHS (r:>0.7; p<0.01). Finally, the FHS is regarded as an important public health policy, that has obtained successful results in Brazil since its implementation. However, in a general context, its expansion did not influence the reduction of mortality due to circulatory diseases, which is an indicator that has increased in the country.
