Abstract:

The Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex is one of the largest heavy civil construction projects in Brazil. In 2014, a major strike for improvements in working conditions took place that exposed different perspectives on worker and union representation. This study analyzes the meanings posed by the modes of worker and union action in their implications for the collective defense of health in this strike experience. To this purpose, a qualitative social research was carried out, using investigation techniques such as participant observation, documentary survey and interviews with workers and union leaders. In the results, a brief reconstruction of these struggles was carried outthe perspective of the workers and the strike agendas such as the organization, mobilizations and tensions present between base workers and the union representing the category are analyzed. It was emphasized the formation of a Base Commission, by a decision of the workers themselves, in an attempt to act autonomously to the official union. Different responsesthe State, companies and the representative union were found as a way of dismantling the workers\' struggle. Finally, there was, synchronously, a struggle for the improvement of working conditions and collective defense of health on the part of workers\' organizations in the workplace in a scenario of constant dispute for union hegemony.
