Abstract:

The detection and monitoring of cognitive deficits in the elderly are necessary because they can impact their functionality. The objective of this integrative review is to analyze the scientific production on the use of cognitive assessment instruments in elderly Brazilians e through articles published in the last five years, indexed in the Web of Science, Pubmed, Scopus and Bireme databases. Inclusion criteria were: original articles published in English and Portuguese,2012 to 2016, with age criteria defined to be considered as elderly, and with a score greater than 6 in the adapted CASP. The exclusion criterion was: to be a summary of congress. The final sample consisted of 100 articles. We present the 61 cognitive assessment instruments used in the studies, with emphasis on the Mini Mental State Examination. This review presents the use of cognitive instruments in Brazilian research, its different versions and which domains are evaluated. The number of instruments present in the literature was vast. The most used were the MEEM (Brucki and collaborators’ version), the Verbal Fluency Test (animals category) and the Span Test of digits (direct and inverse order). The findings presented in this review are relevant not only to the field of observational and experimental research, but also to clinical practice.
