Abstract:

This study analyzed common mental disorders in the adult women according to demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, health-related behavior, and disease history. This was a cross-sectional, population-based study with a cluster sample using data848 womena health survey conducted in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil, in 2008/2009. SRQ-20 was used to evaluate common mental disorders. Prevalence ratios were estimated using multiple Poisson regression in hierarchical model of three stages, considering weights related to the sampling design. Prevalence of common mental disorders was 18.7%. The hierarchical model showed that elderly women, women with low education, housewife, separated or widowed women, who did not eat fruit/vegetables/vegetables daily, who slept six or fewer hours per night, with several chronic diseases and health problems and reporting some violence were more vulnerable to common mental disorders. Therefore, these women should be treated with priority by the health services. The early diagnosis of women with common mental disorders, as well as to treat them, it can help to reduce impacts on the quality of women‘s lives.
