ABSTRACT

In some Latin America countries the development of Poison Control Centers Networks is similar to the one achieved in the developed world; thus, in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile or Cuba, acute poisonings are managed by well trained professionals. However, a different scenario is taking place around chronic effects, as their diagnostic requires more expertise, especially for those with an environmental component. In order to reduce this kind of effects, many times an environmental intervention is more important than a medical one. For acute poisonings, networks of Poison Control Centers have been developed in different nations; though, a similar situation is not working for the diagnosis and treatment of those effects related with chronic environmental exposures. Thus, in this work we are proposing the development of a new discipline: Communitary Clinical Toxicology (CCT); the main objective of this discipline will be to take advantage of the experiences acquired in the area of Clinical Toxicology for the attention of vulnerable communities chronically exposed to xenobiotics. The final idea is to build Multidisciplinary Units for the attention of both: acute and chronic poisonings.
