Abstract:

The national policy on integrative and complementary pratices fosters the provision of Community Therapy by the Brazilian national health care system, the so-called Unified Health System (SUS). This initiative aims at developing community leadership to attend to communities´psychological demands and to build networks in order to extend the efficacy of Primary Health Care. This study aims to describe the social representation on the Community therapist regarding the health care professionals employed at SUS. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty seven (27) professionals who were trained on Community Therapy in 2009 by the State Secretariat of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, in partnership with the Ministry of Health. The Alceste software was utilized for data analysis. The results show that the professionals represent a community therapist, as someone who humanizes the interpersonal relations in the health care sector. However, Primary Health Care professionals subscribe to a model group practice less horizontalized than professionals working at the secondary level of care, in the study represented by Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS).
