Abstract:

Eating attitudes could be defined as beliefs, thoughts, feelings, behaviors and relationship with food. They could influence people’s food choices and health status. Objective: compare eating attitudes of university students from different regions of Brazil and to investigate possible associations and correlations with nutritional status, major, age, individual income and parental education. Methods: 2489 female university students at health area answered the Disordered Eating Attitude Scale – evaluated by total score and its 5 subscales scores. The eating attitudes were compared by means of an analysis of variance. A logistic regression was done to evaluate which variables were associated to the scale score. Results: the Northeast presented more restrictive and compensatory practices, the North and Northeast presented less positive feelings about food and worse idea about normal eating. The score on the scale did not present strong correlation with any of variables studied, but nutritional status and age were associated with the total score. Conclusion: the profile of university students was similar among regions with worse eating attitude in the North and Northeast region. It is believed that these data could help to elucidate dietary patterns and nutritional differences among groups.
