Abstract:

This work has evaluated the face and concurrent validity of the MacArthur scales which aim to capture the subjective social status within the society, community and work contexts. A sample of 159 adults, participants of the ELSA-Brasil cohort in Minas Gerais (2012-2014), was included and epidemiologic, cognitive theory of metaphor and corpus linguistic were applied in the analysis. Concurrent validity was moderate for society ladder (kappaw=0,55), and good for the community (kappaw=0,60) and the work (kappaw=0,67) ladders. The face validity analysis showed that the instrument really capture the subjective social status based on indicator of socioeconomic position. Thus, the results confirmed that the MacArthur scale is a valuable instrument to study social inequalities in health in Brazilian populations.
