Abstract:

Transnational “Big Food” companies use advertising strategies to influence nutritionists, professors and Nutrition students; however, this relationship has conflicts of interest. This study aims to perform a narrative review on the influence of the food industry in training in Nutrition. It was identified that industries seek to induce the recommendation, the prescription and the consumption of products by students and nutritionists through strategies such as sponsorship of scientific meetings, travel funding and donation of gifts. However, the acceptance of these gifts can cause a moral obligation to reward, compromising the judgment of information and the professional conduct decisions. At the University, the advertising occurs mainly through sponsorship of events and research funding, donation of materials and structures and publicity in the classroom. Regulating the conduct of the private sector in the university is essential and, in this perspective, the implementation of regulatory measures to limit the entrance of the food industry in the undergraduate courses in Nutrition is suggested to ensure that the nutritionists will be more prepared to perform their tasks ethically and with autonomy.
