Abstract:

The paper reports efforts to build community partnerhips to promote participatory surveillance in a community documenting the strategies used. Members of the community and the Project team constructed a Social Map documenting the elements that promote or threaten health and wellness in the mapped territory. An action-research project was conducted with women living in a peripheral neighborhood of Fortaleza-CE, from October 2021 to September 2022. Community members participating identified the lack of security, employment, basic sanitation, health professionals in the health center, information about important health conditions, and the lack of environmental inspection as priorities. They also noted high levels of domestic violence, garbage, inadequate care of animals, including abandonment of pets and other animals, divisions within the community created by gangs, precarious housing and involvement of young people with drugs. Identified as promoters of health and wellness in the territory: the Cuca (Art and culture center), as well as churches, schools, clinics and other community-serving institutions. The outcome of the activity was not just the community-specified problems and positive institutional responses, but a resolve in the participants to continue confronting the problems through the development of an action plan and an action research group, effectively a collective of women who have been following up on the implementation of this plan.
