Abstract:

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of added sugars intake within the maximum limit of 5% of the total energy of the diet, according to variables demographic, socioeconomic, health related behaviors and nutritional status in adolescents. This is a cross-sectional population-based study with a two-stage cluster sampling. The amount of free sugar of diet was estimated using a 24-hour dietary recall. Of the 924 adolescents evaluated, only 20.1% (95% CI: 16.8-23.9) met the recommendation of not to exceed 5% of the total calories with added sugars. Higher prevalence rates of adherence to the recommendation were found among males (22.0%), adolescentes aged 15-19 years (24.3%), non-natural in the state of São Paulo (30.4%), those with less screen time (27.5%), those with lower number of household appliances (0-7: 29.5%; 8-15: 20.3%) and in those with higher quality scores of the diet (tercile 2: 17.7%. tercile 3: 37.2%). The results point to the associated factors to added sugars intakean epidemiological perspective, revealing a simultaneity of inappropriate behaviors, that is, the adolescents who ingest more sugars also present longer screen time and worse overall quality of the diet.
