The consumption of psychoactive substances among investigative and military police of the city of Rio de Janeiro was investigated. The data come from two cross-sectional studies on working and health conditions questionnaire administered to a sample of the two corporations. The results show higher frequencies of regular consumption of tobacco (23.3% versus 19.1% of investigative by the military), daily use of alcohol (12% versus 11% of investigative by the military) and tranquilizers in the past year (13.3% and 10.1% of investigative by the military. The consumption of marijuana among officers was 0.1% and 1.1% on investigative in the military and cocaine use among military was 1.1%. Alcohol consumption appeared intense and causing problems at work and in social and family relationships of these officers. It is emphasized the need for preventive policies to addictions and the possible underestimation of information on illicit substances.Key words: , , , , .
