Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the consumption of ultra-processed products (UPP) and associated factors in the first year of life. METHODOS: Data analysis from 1-year follow-up of the MINA-Brazil birth cohort. Socioeconomic, demographic and obstetric data were collected at the maternity hospital; at one-year follow-up visits (n=774), dietary intake of the day before the interview was investigated in order to assess UPP. Multiple Poisson regression model with robust variance was performed to estimate prevalence ratio (PR) and confidence interval (95%CI) of factors associated with the consumption ≥3 UPP. RESULTS: The prevalence of UPP consumption was 87.5%; of these, 40.5% consumed ≥3 UPP. Lower level of maternal education (≤9 years [PR:2.02 95%CI 1.42; 2.87] and between 10-12 years [PR:1.55, 95%CI 1, 11; 2.14]) compared to >12 years of schooling, below-average wealth index (PR:1.26, 95%CI 1.04; 1.53), and having a teenage mother (PR:1.19, 95%CI 1.00; 1.49) were associated with ≥3 UPP. Lack of diversity in complementary feeding was inversely associated with the outcome (PR:0.65, 95%CI 0.51; 0.81). CONCLUSION: Consumption of UPP was associated with lower wealth index, education and maternal age. The dietary diversity was associated with higher consumption of UPP, warning the need to include as an indicator of complementary feeding the assessment of AUP consumption, aiming at appropriate m
