Abstract:

This study aimed to conduct a review specifically on the content validity, one of the most important stages during the construction and adaptation processes of instruments. A literature search, defined as integrative review, was performed through a research of national and international databases. Initially, a description about the conceptual basis and the measurement methods used in the content validity was made, with emphasis on its application in health area. It was found controversy in the literature on the content validity terminology and concept. The recommended procedures used to achieve the content validity during the construction and adaptation processes of instruments were described, especially the judges’ assessment involving qualitative and quantitative procedures. The number, selection and qualification of judges were also described. The different methods used to quantify the agreement among the experts were verified, mainly the Content Validity Index (CVI). This study described aspects of the content validity process, one of the procedures to be considered by researchers and health professionals concerned to use reliable and appropriated instruments and scales for a specific population.
