Abstract:

This study aimed to evaluated the dietary fiber intake and associated factors in adolescents; identify the food sources of the nutrient; verify the relationship of dietary patterns indicators (energy/macro/micronutrients) with dietary fiber intake. This is a cross-sectional population-based study with 24-hour recall data. The NOVA classification was used and the contribution of food to dietary fiber content was evaluated. Reference valuesthe World Health Organization (≥ 12.5 g) and the Institute of Medicine (14 g) per 1,000 kcal were used to assess consumption. The mean intake was 6.4 g of dietary fiber/1,000 kcal/day, 1.5 g of soluble and 4.9 g of insoluble, for the 891 adolescents. The consumption of fiber was low, especially those who ate less fruits, vegetables, beans, more soda, sausages, and those who did not eat breakfast daily. Unprocessed/minimally processed foods provided 68.8%, 53.7% and 72.1% of the total soluble and insoluble fiber, and ultra-processed products (UP), 24.8%, 37.9% and 21.0%. The fiber consumption was inversely associated with energy intake, fat, free sugar and animal protein content of the diet. Theinsufficient fiber intake signals the need for actions that promote healthy and adequate nutrition at individual and family levels.
