Abstract:
Coping strategies as a resilience component have three objectives in the elderly: protection before threats against adaptation, recoveringthe adversities effects, and development.Purpose: Investigate internal and external validity for a coping inventory
Methods: 415 elderly (aged 65 and more) answered measures of coping, depression, self-rated health and satisfaction of life. The scores were compared among themselves and genre, age and income. Exploratory factorial analysis and internal consistency were made.
Results: Three factors explained 30.8% of the variance: 1 (non-adaptive strategies), 2 (adaptive), 3 (development). The scale showed moderate internal consistency (α = 0.541). Development strategies correlated positively with self-rated health, and satisfaction of life, and negatively with depression (p
