Abstract:

Although the COVID-19 pandemic is growing in the Northeast of Brazil, there is still a debate about the easing of social distancing measures. The aim of the study was to assess, in the light of the epidemiological-sanitary situation in the region, the pertinence of the proposals for relaxation of social distancing rules in this Region. Based on the WHO guidelines for relaxation of social distance, operational indicators were built and analyzed for each of the guidelines, in the context of the Northeast region. To analyze the behavior of the epidemic, according to ed indicators, Joinpoint Trend Analysis techniques, heat maps, rate ratios and comparison of the time trend between capitals and the interior of the states were used. The peak of the epidemic daily growth occurred in March-April / 2020, but there was no downward trend in cases or deaths over 14 days. In all states the number of tests performed was insufficient. In the epidemiological week 24, the state percentages of occupancy of ICU / COVID-19 beds were close to or above 70%. The period and growth rate of the epidemic varied between states and between areas of the same state. The epidemiological situation of the Northeastern States, analyzed here, does not fit the criteria and parameters compatible with the recommendation of relaxation of the social distancing measures.
