Abstract:

This paper briefly reconstructs the impeachment process of president Dilma Rousseff, which consisted in a parliamentary putsch, situating it at the end of three political cycles of the Brazilian republic - the first a more encompassing, democratizing one; the second, of the PT (Workers’ Party) as hegemonic within the left; and, finally, the shorter cycle of its governments. Altogether this constitutes a crisis of the republic, though not an institutional rupture or a ‘state of exception’. The article then goes on to analyse three main issues: the developmentalist project implemented by the PT’s governments in alliance of building companies; the role of the judiciary and in particular of the ‘Car Wash’ operation; and the conflictual relation between the new evangelical churches and the LGBT social movements. The article ends with an assessment of the defeat and isolation of the left at present as well as suggesting democracy in particular as the core a renewed project of the left.
