Abstract:

This paper analyses the illegal trade market of misoprostol, the main drug for medical abortion in Brazil. The study was conducted at the Distrito Federal Public Prosecution Service between 2004 and 2010 and analyzed ten cases. The cases were organized by three categories: 1. women’s stories; 2. the drug sellers’ profile; 3. maternal mortality cases. The research was reviewed by an ethics committee. The main outcomes are: 1. young women with their male partners engaged in steady relationships use misoprostol alone or with help from the drug sellers; 2. the drug sellers work at the community drugstore and are local points to circulate misoprostol. They instruct women how to use the drug and how to prevent infections, but refuse to provide them with care in case of emergency; 3. there were two cases of maternal mortality in consequence of the combination of high risk methods, such as the vaginal probe and misoprostol. The main causes for maternal mortality are the time women take to seek medical care, for they fear criminal prosecution, and the high risk mixed methods chosen to perform the abortion.
