Abstract:

School-based cross-sectional study that evaluated the prevalence and associated factors of daily intake of soft drinks, sweets and fried foods among adolescents (15 to 20 years) of public schools in Caruaru-PE, in 2007. To evaluate the factors associated to the daily consumption of soft drinks, sweets and fried foods, a multivariate and hierarchical analysis was performed, through Poisson regression, with social-demographic variables in the first hierarchy level, behavioral in the second and related to dietary standard in the third. The consumption of soft drinks, sweets and fried foods at least once a week was mentioned by 90,9%, 95,4% and 89,6% of the adolescents, respectively. The corresponding prevalence to the daily consumption of these items were 30,2%, 42,0% and 28,3%. The daily consumption of sweets was 21% higher among girls and 25% higher among adolescents that ate rice and bean daily. Concerning the fried foods, the girls mentioned a 37% consumption higher than the boys. Adolescents who consumed meat every day, presented a daily consumption of fried foods 43% higher. The consumption of soft drinks, sweets and fried foods among the adolescents from Caruaru was high and showed a homogeneous consumption standard for most analyzed variables.
