Abstract

The biomedical model reduce deafness to a bio-physiological problem and Interventions in health care correspond to such representation. Consequently, the deaf is someone with a structural abnormality to be corrected by technologies. This study aimed to understand the deafness from the perspectives of deaf persons, in order to identify elements for public policies addressed to that specific group. The research was oriented by the qualitative approach, using as techniques focus groups and interviews. The sample was composed by 9 members of a deaf community located in Fortaleza (Ceará-Brazil), all fluent in Brazilian Sign Language-pounds. The results show deafness is understood as identity, a way of being in the world. It is a social construction based on day-by-day experiences of visual interaction with the nature and the society. In this process, some cultural and linguistic have a central role as identity. Some public policies and technological interventions, like cochlear implants, are represented as a setback, the denial of her being in the world and loss of identity. In order to plan effective interventions it is necessary to consider the complexity of the deafness, including social-historic, cultural and symbolic dimensions where different discourses co-exist, in addition to the biological representation.
