Abstract:

AIM: To analyze delay in the search in first health service for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, Ribeirao Preto. METHODS: Epidemiological and Cross-seccional study, with 94 TB patients under treatment in the Ribeirao Preto, in 2009. Was used a structured questionnaire, based on the Primary Care Assessment Tool, adapted for TB care. To establish the median (15 days or more) to characterize the delay in the search in first health service. Through the prevalence ratio, we identified the variables associated with greater delay. RESULTS: The first health care service sought were Emergency Services (ES) (57.5%). Was checked the most the search for the first time to service the largest median occurred among males, who were 50 to 59 years old, who received below five minimum wages, were pulmonary form, were new cases of TB, that were not co-infected with HIV, who did not consume alcoholic drink, who had satisfactory knowledge about TB before diagnosis (the latter with a statistically significant with delay association) and who sought health care closer to home. CONCLUSION: There is a there is a necessity for training health professionals about the signs and symptoms of the disease, reducing barriers of access to timely diagnosis of TB and widely disseminated to the community in general.
