Abstract:

In many countries, a person’s visit to Primary Health Care (PHC) may be classified with the International Classication of Primary Care (ICPC-2). This instrument allows to consider the person’s reasons to seek care, beeing hepful to design strategies in order to attend the population’s health needs. Objective: to study the main reasons for encouter in same-day appointment on PHC units of a medium-sized city of Brazil. Methodology: all encounters of a typical month of work of three family practice residents were considered. Data was extracted from a secondary database of same-day appointments during springtime of 2010, classified witth ICPC and then statistically analysed. Results: 1222 registries were considered; 32 reasons for encounter were responsable for 50% of contacts. Most common episodes of care were related to the ICPC chapter General and unespecific. About 20% of visits ocurred for administrative reasons. Female sex and greater age (util 59 years old) were determinants of more reasons for encounter. Conclusion: the knowledge of reasons for encounter classified with ICPC-2 may help PHC teams to deal with health problems presented by their population on same-day appointments – the critical point of access to PHC.
