Abstract:

This study aimed to estimate the demand for contraception in Brazil based on the latest available data and to identify possible differences in the profile of these women according to sociodemographic and economic variables. Datathe 2006 National Survey of Demography and Health of Women and Children (PNDS) and the estimation method proposed by Westoff and Ochoa (1991) were used. Despite the high percentage of contraceptive use in Brazil, the unmet contraception was estimated in 8.3% among marriage or in cohabitationwomen between 15 and 49 years old. That is, there is a specific group of women (at the beginning and at the end of reproductive life, lower economic strata, evangelical and non-religious) who would not like to have more children or have them later and cannot do this because of lack of access to thewithalof fertility regulation. It was concluded that there was a negligible reduction in demand in relation to 1996. As a result, has been reinforced the need for targeted public investments in order to reduce the levels and differentials of contraceptive demand in the country and to guarantee the rights of implementation of reproductive preferences.
