Abstract:

Introduction: Pain is a public health problem responsible for work days loss. Objective: Analyze the prevalence of dental pain and absenteeism, and possible association with socio demographic characteristics. Methodology: This cross sectional design research used a random sample of 169 subjects selected from a universe of 666 workers. Data was collected by a trained researcher using a questionnaire. Exact Fisher test verified the possible associations; the strength of the associations was verified by Odds Ratio, with 5% significance. Results: The prevalence of dental pain was of 46,7% and absenteeism 12,7%. There was no association between dental pain and variables analyzed – sex, age, income and instruction. For absenteeism, the subjects who had less years of instruction declared more work loss hours (OR= 8,850, IC95%= 2,114;37,046). Conclusion: Pain prevalence was expressive and was not associated with controlled variables in this study. Dental pain was sufficient to produce absenteeism, and this was associated with instruction. Periodic exams must be motivated for diagnosis and minimal intervention avoiding dental pain.
