Abstract:

The study aimed to describe the dependence related to shopping, preparing and eating food activities in elderly living in the urban area of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. Bivariate analysis and logistic ordinal regression assessed the relationship between the three dependences and exposures studied. Among the 1,451 elderly studied, 21.1% needed help for some activity and the care was mostly done by their children and spouses. The highest prevalence of dependence was found in the activity shopping food activity (20.7%), followed by preparing the meal (11.5%) and eating (2.0%). Elderly aging 80 years old or more were more likely to be in a category of greater dependence in relation to 60-69 years old, reaching an odd of 5.0 for men and 7.1 for women. For those who considered their health as regular, poor or very poor, the chance was around 2.3 times higher, being similar between the sexes. Women without partners were 1.7 times more likely, and more education showed 70.0% protection relative to their reference categories; poorer men were 5.3 times more likely compared to the wealthier ones. The results show the most vulnerable subgroups to present dependencies and the importance of family caregivers.
