Abstract:

This article is an essay that thinks of art, particularly, of cinema as complementary resources for discussing health issues. This text is part of a multicentric research on elderly people with dependence carried out in eight Brazilian cities. The article analyzes two films that address the contingencies of old age with dependence and the relationship between caregivers and people cared for others. “Poetry” shows the impasses of an elderly woman who is economically and emotionally overworked and who begins to show symptoms of Alzheimer\'s disease. The second film “What ever happened to Baby Jane?” exposes the delicate and complex relationship between the caregiver and care person dyad. The article aims to broaden the understanding of social processes such as aging, through cinema, encouraging the use of films in permanent education settings involving researchers, students and health workers.
