Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to estimate COVID-19 lethality in the indigenous population in Mexico during the years 2020 to 2022 considering clinical characteristics and social conditions. The data camethe Epidemiological Surveillance System of Respiratory Diseases, identifying the positive cases of COVID-19 among the indigenous population; lethality was evaluated according to clinical conditions and conditions of vulnerability due to social deprivation. The number of positive cases of COVID-19 in the indigenous population represented 0,7% of the total number of cases; the case fatality rate in the indigenous population was 9,8% in contrast to 4,6% in the non-indigenous population. Lethality was higher in men; however, in contrast to the non-indigenous population, the association with diabetes, hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency, obesity, and smoking was lower in the indigenous population. A greater vulnerability to social conditions was present among the indigenous population in contrast to the non-indigenous population, mainly in terms of economic income, education, and access to health services.
