Abstract:

The use of media by children in early childhood is increasingly common, making it necessary to investigate the determinants of screen time, understood as the total time for which the child remains exposed to all screens, including television and interactive media. It is a descriptive and exploratory cross study, with the sample consists of 180 children, between 24 and 42 months of age, allocated in: Group 1, exposure time to the screen less than two hours/day; Group 2, exposure time to the screen equal to or more than two hours/day. It was used a bivariate and binary logistic regression analysis. The determining factors in the screen time studied were: family environment, evaluated with the Family Environment Resource Inventory; socioeconomic factors; nutritional status and development status evaluated with the Bayley III. As result, most children, 63%, had screen time over than 2 hours a day, and television still is the main responsible for exposing the child to the screens, contributing considerably to this exposure. It was observed that time exposure to the screen was positively associated with family resources, language development and the economic level. However, only the last two factors explained the longer screen time.
