Abstract:

Given communication and socialization difficulties, it is challenging to develop research strategies that allow the participation of autistic people. In that regard, this study aimed to describe the development of a research involving autistic people with different support demands. A methodological and participatory study was carried out for the construction and validation of a data collection instrument. The instrument aimed to analyze the effects of a period of socio-sanitary crisis and the coping strategies used by autistic people, and it was developed for use in the most critical period of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The construction of the instrument involved the following steps with the respective stakeholders: Determination of the domains to be assessed (researchers with consultation and experts and autistic people); Instrument design (researchers with the co-participation of autistic people); Validation of the instrument (Experts and autistic people led by the researchers); Final approval of the instrument (co-participation between researchers and autistic people). In addition to making the instrument more robust, the participation of autistic people in the designing of the data collection instrument and in the planning of its application illustrates the importance of inclusion strategies that should also be employed in scientific research.
