ABSTRACTConsidering the Diabetes mellitus (DM) as a relevant health problem in Brazil and the importance of prevalence estimatives to the planning and strategies in public health, proposed this work aiming to estimate the prevalence reason of Diabetes mellitus (DM) in different Brazilian states in the period of 2002 to 2004 and 2005 to 2007. It’s a descriptive study, based on the Brazilian population data with diagnostic of DM registered in the Sistema de Informação da Atenção Básica (SIAB) (Information System of the Basic Attention) at the Ministério da Saúde (Health Department). The prevalence rates were calculated to the period of 2002 to 2004 and of 2005 to 2007 and then it was estimated the Razão de Prevalências (R) (Prevalences Reason) per point and per interval of 95% of trustful (IC95%). It was observed the high prevalence of DM in the Brazilian states with a significant increasing (R>1; IC95%>1) between the periods in all Brazilian states, with the highlights to Federal District (R=1,9800; IC95%=1,9724–1,9876) and the state of Maranhão (R=1,5217; IC95%=1,5198–1,5235). We can conclude that there was a significant increasing of DM prevalence in Brazil from 2002 to 2007, pointing out to our necessity of strategy formulation of prevention and disease control.
