Abstract:

The number of households with hungry residents increased from 9% to 15.5% in 2022 in Brazil. Using Survey of Family Budgets (POF) for 2017/2018, this study explores the food consumption of the Brazilian population according to the different dimensions of food insecurity. The Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA) was used to assess the level of food security in the household, while the food consumption was assessed through 24-hour dietary recalls. Foods were classified according to the degree of processing and divided into food groups/subgroups. It is noteworthy that the share in kcal of fresh or minimally processed foods was more significant among the population in food insecurity. There was a difference in the frequency of consumption of all groups evaluated (p<0.05), with the exception of the cereals, drinks and soups/broths group. The consumption (% and grams) of fruits and vegetables was much more significant in the population in food security, while the beans/other legumes, flour and eggs groups were more consumed by households in food insecurity. These results demonstrate the importance of expanding public policies that guarantee access to quality food in sufficient quantity for populations with greater food vulnerability, respecting diversity and food culture.
