Abstract:

This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the association of demographic and socioeconomic factors, chronic morbidities and receipt of health advice with dietary patterns of elderly. A reduced food frequency questionnaire was applied to 1,426 older adults in Pelotas, Southern Brazil, and dietary patterns were obtained using principal component analysis. Two dietary patterns were identified: healthy pattern (consisted of wholegrain food, fruits, vegetables, and milk) and Western pattern (comprising sweets, fried foods, frozen foods, sausages and fast food). Females, non-smokers, and non-alcoholic individuals adhered more to the healthy pattern, as males, smokers, alcoholics, and overweight individuals adhered more to the Western pattern. Higher income and schooling were associated with higher adherence to both patterns, and chronic diseases were not associated to any of the patterns. The receipt of advice for healthy habits was associated with greater adherence to the healthy dietary pattern and lower adherence to the Western pattern. There is a need to strengthen effective guidance on healthy habits in health services to promote healthier eating practices, with special attention to males, smokers, alcoholics and overweight elderly.
