Abstract:

To identify differences in food consumption according to healthy and unhealthy eating markers among adults living in urban and rural areas of Brazil considering the country macroregions. A cross-sectional study with datathe National Health Survey (2013) was used. Diet was assessed by using healthy and unhealthy eating markers. Prevalences (%) were estimated and sequential logistic regression models were adjusted to estimate odds ratios (OR and confidence intervals (95% CI). In urban areas were identified a higher recommended consumption of fruits and vegetables, and regular consumption of fish, soft drinks and meal replacement by snacks, while in rural areas were identified a higher consumption of excess of fat and beans. Adjusted analyzes showed higher regular consumption of beans (OR = 1.20; 95% CI: 1.14-1.26) and excess fat (OR = 1.48; 95% CI: 1.42-1.55 ); and lower consumption of soft drinks (OR = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.52-0.59), fruits and vegetables (OR = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.85-0.96) and meal replacement by snacks (OR = 0.59; 95% CI: 0.51-0.66) in rural compared to urban areas. Similar trends were observed in the macroregions of the country. Differences in food consumption among Brazilians living in rural and urban areas denote the importance of fostering food policies that respect and value food traditions and culture.
