Abstract:

This is a prevalence study conducted with people living with HIV or affected by AIDS, submitted to antiretroviral therapy, to compare the quality of life and food insecurity between men and women. Four hundred eighty-one individuals who sought hospital care were included in the study. Food insecurity was assessed by the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale and quality of life by the WHOQOL-HIV-Bref tool. The results were presented with absolute and relative frequency and the differences between the genders were tested with the chi-square test, considering a significance level of 5%. Of the total sample, 40.1% were female, and had worse income (65,8%) low education level (72,5%), lower prevalence of food security (29,2%), and quality of life (54,9%) conditions when compared with the men (44,4%). The results of this study reveal that in addition to the vulnerability of patients carrying the HIV virus, this group also has an important gender inequality. The management of care geared to these people should consider this important finding, promoting access to social policies and promoting equality between genders in favor of a fairer and more equitable life for women.
