Abstract:

The objective of this study is to conduct a survey of the literature on neonatal patient discharge in hospital and maternity settings. This is a scoping review based on the Joanna Briggs Institute methodological framework that had the following research question: What are the approaches described in the literature on the transition from hospital to home care for newborns at the time of discharge? The collection period was from May to June 2023 in the National Library of Medicine National Institute of Medicine of Health of the USA, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Nursing Database, SCOPUS and Web of Science. For the searches, controlled descriptors were used based on the participants (newborn; neonate); the concept (patient discharge; patient discharge summary; transition of care from hospital to home) and the context (hospitals; maternity hospitals). Of the 1,176 selected texts, 11 comprised the final sample, published from 2019 to 2023. The analysis of the findings revealed the main categories related to neonatal patient discharge: Readiness for Discharge; Parental Readiness for Care Transition; Instruments for Support in Care Transition; Education for Discharge. It is concluded that the use of various tools and support instruments for the quality of neonatal patient discharge is beneficial for the development and implementation of health technologies aimed at newborn care.
