Abstract:

In view of the Constitutional Amendment 95 and economic crisis, the possible effects that austerity measures can have on the achievement of the goals established for the control of noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) in the country are discussed. The trends of NCDs and risk factors were analyzed, according to dataepidemiological surveys and mortality datathe Global Burden of Disease study. The results indicate a trend of stability in mortality rates by NCD in 2015 and 2016. Brazilians with low schooling, in general, have a higher prevalence of risk factors, and a lower one of protective factors. In 2015 to 2017, previously favorable trends reversed for indicators such as fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity, tobacco trends stabilized, and increased consumption of alcohol. In conclusion, if these trends are maintained, Brazil will not meet the targets previous agreed upon in conjunction with the World Health Organization and the United Nations for reducing NCDs and their risk factors.
